“Are we obligated to help others?”
According to Hart, “being obliged to do something implies an element of coercion where, having an obligation suggests simply a moral duty.” Obligations are fulfilled not because it is sensible to do so but rather that such conduct is considered right or morally correct if you obliged yourself to help others. Do other people really need help? Obligations is like keeping a promise but you are compulsory to do it so. Are we ready to compulsory help others? If obligation is a responsibility. Are we ready for this?
I, as a youth, believe hat I am not obligated to help others. When we say obligated or obligation it is that you should help other people no matter what the means would be, no matter what it might cause you, no matter what he/she has done to you, no matter where you are, no matter where they are. Obligated is that you are responsible for other people, you should help them at all times, at all cause. It is a duty, it is a commitment. If you help others because of obligated it is not for the sake of good will, but for the sake of commitment and duty.
Additionally, Obligation is a responsibility. Personally, I am not ready to face this kind of responsibility. I am not ready to face a world where I am pushed through my limits even if it is against my will. I am not ready to be a puppet to anyone who is dictating me what to do. I am not ready to help other people if they do not deserve it. Not everyone deserves help, not everyone deserves kindness.
Moreover, I am not obligated to help other people. I am not obligated to do anything I cannot do. If I cannot do what you asked me to do, I would not do it. If you failed at your exams because I didn’t let you copy my answers, it is not my obligation to help you because it is your responsibility to study. If you want me to do illegal things like sell drugs, of course I cannot do it! I am not obliged to. If you are late for your class and I first called a cab, it is not my right to give it to you besides I have errands too, it is your right to wake up early and move fast. If you don’t have your identity card and the guard wont let you in, it is not his responsibility to let you in. It is your obligation as a student to always bring your identity card. Not everyone deserves help, because some may take advantage of your kindness.
Lastly,I am not obligated to help other people but I am obligated to show good will and good moral. I am obligated to let people be obligated so that they will not depend their situation from the help of other people. I am obligated to let people be obligated to stand on their own feet, to seek solution for their own problem. The thing about people is that they won’t learn to stand on their own as long as they know that there will always be someone who is obligated to help them because of the “guilt”.
You, me, us, - we, are not in any way obliged to help others but to reach a higher pedestal on the moral scale we have to help people. Therefore, I am not obligated to help others. Thank you.
